The Big One

i went hunting on wednesday. the weather was not supposed to be good this weekend and i had to help one of my family members move on saturday, so I got out of work early and met my dad at the hunting spot. i was guardedly optimistic about the success we would have. the season has not been so spectacular so far.

since last fall, when I saw quite a few deer while walking to my stand, I always have an arrow out and ready. I was about 75 yards from my stand and I saw two deer running towards me. the last thing I saw before I looked down to get my trigger release was a lot of antler outside the ears of the deer to the left. my attention was immediately on that deer alone and the second deer did not get a second thought. I drew my bow back as I looked back up at the deer. they had both stopped 10-15 yards away, both behind trees. the one on the right 10 yards away, head behind a tree. the other deer was in front of me, behind a tree along with a different fallen down tree. as I surveyed the situation I realized that even if the big one moved forward I would not have a clear shot for some time due to the fallen tree. I looked behind the tree that was obscuring the front part of the deer and saw a small (two paper plate size) hole that was clear. immediately I knew that was my only chance for a shot at this buck. as my eye was moving towards the sight to line up the shot, the buck was off as quickly as he had come.

as he bounded away from me I was left with an eye full as I saw the full beauty of his glorious rack. as long as he had brow tines, which I assume he did, he was an eight pointer. an eight point buck is not so spectacularly amazing but estimating his spread at 15-18 inches, both of the points (G2 and G3) coming off the main beam were atleast 6-9 inches, this was by far the largest buck I have ever seen in the woods and would have been a shoe in to join the elk in my house.

the whole encounter lasted five seconds, tops. maybe less.

I was about two seconds away from getting a shot at what may be a buck of a lifetime for me.

as he haunts my thoughts and dreams, besides getting the shot off, I am left with the second best thing, the story and experience I am able to share with those that share my passion for hunting.

I think what the people that 'dont get' hunting fail to realize is that (for most) it is not about killing. its not even about some macho, im a man because I hunt, desire. its about being able to escape from the busyness of life, stopping to enjoy, and take pleasure in, the beauty of what God has created. its about spending time with those that share in your passion and excitement about the experience such as the one above.

like many times out, I did not see a deer the rest of the night. some would say it was a waste of time, I would say that it was time well spent. I will relish those moments, and thank God for every time he allows me to enjoy what he has given us.

The End

the season officially ended on tuesday night. we unfortunately lost to greenville 7-2. the score is somewhat deceiving because the game was closer than it looks. we had about two or three chances that really should have been goals. once again we played lackluster defense.

hopefully the team is willing to work hard next summer and go into the fall hungrier to achieve more.

final record was 7-9-1. not bad but should have been better.

Fifth

our last regular season game was last night. we beat tri-county 3-2. we ended up winning fifth place in the conference tournament and tied for fifth overall with tri-county since they finished fifth in the regular season. it was good for us to get the win but not very pretty. once again sub par defense. lazy, concentration, discipline...... not sure what really describes our defense but it has to get better.

started out the game really well, dominated and scored early. from there it went downhill, defense got sloppy and allowed them back into the game. 1-1 at half. they went up 2-1 into the second half. we pulled back the tying goal with less than 20 minutes to play and scored the game winning goal with only 6 minutes left. we passed the ball fairly well but we chasing for much of the game defensively as we were not marking close enough.

greenville on tuesday in districts, if we win probably fremont on thursday................

soccer

busy week for soccer.

lost to fremont 5-1.
not a great game obviously but not as bad as i thought it was going to be. fremont is undefeated and we did not play that bad. all of the goals we let up with the exception of a poor call for a penalty kick were from defensive mistakes. goalkeeper made one misplay and let a throw in get past him rather easily. the three other goals were due to lack of marking. not acceptable. jv mistakes that should never have happen. they did have a very good german foreign exchange player that made their team what it is. could get them in districts if we beat greenville a week from tuesday......

lost to fruitport 5-0 in conference tournament.
despite what the score indicates, best game i have ever seen the team play. first half we played them pretty much even and actually had pressure on them. unlucky not to go into half up 1-0 instead we were down 1-0 at the break. had a shot go off the upper 90 cross bar. keeper made two good saves on the rebounds from the initial shot as well. other chances in the first also did not go our way. second half was much of the same but went down 2-0 part way through on a bad piece of defending as my central defender dribbled too much, was double teamed and lost the ball with no one left to stop the attackers. it fell apart with 15 minutes left in the game. just as i was about to make the switch to put my fastest defender up front to try and grab a couple quick goals we left a man unmarked at the far post and they scored to make it 3-0. didnt see the fourth goal, trying to talk to one of my captians about a yellow card he got. trash talking, foul /abusive language and physical play from the other team goes unnoticed by the refs but my players get punished. last goal was with about 1 minute to play. first half showed what the team is capable of and the future looks very bright. as long as the team works hard and improves over the summer next year could be very exciting. as long as i solve my goalkeeper problem. i need one trained over the summer. wink wink.

won 3-0 over Grant.
lackluster first half, 1-0 lead. better job in the second half. sustained pressure, less chances for the other team offensively, and more aggresiveness in the middle of the field. should have beat them worse but our team does not have the goal scoring punch to put the ball in at will. passed well and kept up the pressure.

tri-county on tuesday for fifth place in the conference tournament. we lost 1-0 last time when we should not have. hopefully the team will come out hungry and beat them soundly.
