Do we fear God? In our consumer driven please everybody culture the answer is probably no. Maybe the better question is, should we fear God? There are so many competing religions out there I think far too often we just try to emphasize that God is love. It is true that God IS love but, should we stop there? I think to have a clear and true understanding, whatever we can as humans understand about God, we have to also acknowledge that God is holy and God is a God of justice.

The implications of God being just and holy are not quite as palatable than the statement God is love. There is a perceived negative connotation to what follows for a holy and just God. It means there is punishment for not following God. It means eternal separation. It means there is a hell. (why I believe in hell, Francis Chan's new book, Erasing Hell does a much better job than I could do)It means that we can never in our wildest imaginations live up to the standards that are required to be in the presence of a God that is holy. While those may seem like negatives I see them as positives. If we try to water down God to a few palatable attributes we rob Him of who He really is and what that means for our lives.

Psalm 86:11 says: "Teach me your ways O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name."

The Psalmist is asking to know God more, to live more closely to how God says we should, all so he can fear God's name.

Why does he want to fear God's name? Maybe he realizes that if we dont fear God's name we will try to put him in a box at our level. Knowing more about God, having a better grasp of ALL of God's attributes, not just the ones that lead to warm fuzzies, is not something to be avoided but embraced. Knowing God's attributes is not the same as understanding them. Maybe knowing what they are and what they result in will lead us towards a fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 1:7a "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge"

Some people turn away from God because of some of the attributes that have perceived negative connotations but the wisest man that ever lived says that fearing the Lord is the BEGINNING of knowledge.

Over a year again

So it has been over a year since I last posted. I should really write more often. I wonder if I put some relavent words in here if it would come up higher on a google search?

I was reading in Proverbs tonight and I came across a familiar verse.
4:23 - Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

I have heard this used in relation to romantic relationships. You cant give your heart away Proverbs says to guard it. While it may be true to be careful who you give your heart to, I think this verse is talking about something else here. The verses surrounding this verse are talking about righteous living and wicked living. What does it look like and what are the consequences of living a wicked life? Or a righteous life? I think what the Solomon is getting at is that what is in our hearts plays out in our actions. If we are careful about what we put into our hearts, that we make sure it is righteousness, then we will reap the benefits of living out a righteous life. If I continually put into my heart what is contrary to God's way of living I cannot expect to live out the life of love that Christ calls us to.

What do I allow into my heart that will keep me from living the life that God desires me to live?

Something from Romans

I am reading through Romans with a commentary. I think I like Romans because there is logic behind what Paul is saying. My mind works with reasoning and logic, Romans just seems to make sense. I just started the commentary tonight and it was discussing the first seven verses. He spent time discussing the phrase "obedience that comes from faith". This topic comes up quite a bit in the book overall. The relationship between obedience and faith is not cut and dry but I think it is important to note that you can have apparent obedience without faith. There are many people that seem to live good lives, even Christian, that do what they are suppose to, but without faith there is no eternity with Jesus.

The author puts it well:
"But never can we obey without believing. If obedience is implied from the beginning of our faith, faith is always essential for any true obedience. It is true that people can outwardly confrom with the demands of the gospel. All of us know non-Christians whose outward conduct appears to be closer to the demands of Scripture than that of some Christians. But without the inward commitment of the heart, such obedience is, in biblical terms, no obedience at all."

It is sad to think that some people have disconnected the two. Faith and obedience are interconnected. I cannot have true faith without obedience and obedience means nothing if I dont have the faith to go along with it.

I have not posted in a while. I have something brewing but here is something worth reading. Not sure its factual but I got it in an email so it must be true.

We beat Fremont 3-0 tonight. We still did not play well. Not sure what its going to take to get the team back to playing as well as we did at the beginning of the season. I hope it starts to sink in what I am saying. Only time will tell.

We lost to Northpointe 6-3. We played terrible. From the practice after MCC to last Thursday we did not play well. Hopefully they will come back from the long weekend rejuvenated and ready to play. On the upside the JV played a really good game and won 2-1 but it should have been about 5-1.

Evolution, Global Warming, and the Assumptions We M ake

i see evolution and global warming being very similar. what makes evolution and global warming so similar? many would probably not see much similarity between the two. some time ago i heard something about the global warming crisis which is upon us and the similarities hit me. first, both are vehemently defended, those of us that choose to oppose these ideas must be too blind, stupid, or close minded to see the ultimate truth that is evolution and global warming. well, that is what we are told. i do not see myself as blind, stupid or close minded. (clarification - i have never heard anyone actually say those who oppose these ideas are blind, stupid, or close minded but i believe it to be a valid sample opinion based on what i have read and hear in the news.) the defenders of these two ideas would burn at the stake for their beliefs were we living in a different time period.

second, the general public is told to believe these two ideas based on the opinion of the so called experts. while at first glance that seems to make sense, on a closer examination, it is discovered that asking pertinent questions and expecting honest and correct answers is entirely forbidden. obviously questions are permitted but for the most part they are softball questions asked by those in the media/scientific community that do not care to dig deep enough to find the real truth. it is always a good idea to listen to the opinions of the experts. but it is not a good idea to put blind faith into what those experts are saying. when we are told to believe what they have to say based solely on the initials after their name and the credentials of where they work we begin to tread down a very slippery slope.

third and related to the second, is that the assumptions held by the 'experts' all too often have more to do with their support of the idea than the merits of the idea itself. both evolution and global warming are not as cut and dry as the experts would have us believe, unless you take the assumptions that lead the experts. the assumptions they make have a tremendous impact on the conclusions they make.

evolution and global warming are both grand in scale. if you change the assumptions you make, you will change your view of the topic.

evolution is only possible if an infinite number of mutations happen by chance to form a single cell continuing all the way up to humans. most who believe evolution would not even question that there is even a chance that may not be possible. what happens if you scrutinize the genetic mechanism that makes life possible? does that genetic mechanism allow for the freedom to make the changes that are necessary for life to evolve the way the experts say it has?

i have not done much reading on global warming but as the name suggests it is global. the global climate is not something that can be diagnosed simply and with a small formula. there are major assumptions that have to be set up before any sort of predictions are even possible. the long term and global effects of every component have to be evaluated as to their impact. how do we know on a global scale the effects of each component? is it a safe assumption that the way something reacts under a certain set of circumstances will be the same on a global scale? are rising temperatures an indication that the global climate is near a collapse or major change?

are there experts that are equally knowledgeable that come to different conclusions? why? if the dissenting views are discarded not because of the evidence but because of unrelated reasons what does that say about the prevailing view? what are the motives behind the experts? is there a vested interest in keeping their view the same?

i do not have the time, space, or eloquence to try and make an argument against either idea.(others more persuasive than i have written books on both subjects) my point is that the assumptions we make have an impact far greater than we realize. it is so easy to go with the flow and forget to question what we are doing and why we are doing it.

what would change if we questioned some of the assumptions we have that govern the choices we make?

if those assumptions are wrong are we willing to put them behind us?

The War Inside

My life right now is simple yet so complicated at the same time. I am frustrated by the dichotomy that is living the Christian life. Not in a bad way, when I go to church on Sundays I am encouraged about living out my faith, it seems so easy. But then life begins on Mondays and the complications build. I am not questioning anything about my faith, but more why it is so hard for me sometimes. For some it seems so easy, at times, for me, it feels like a chore. I am quiet, non-confrontational, many would probably say 'a good guy', and being who I want to be as a Christian does not come easy for me. The truth of Jesus is so clear to me, yet why is it so hard to express to others? I have spent my whole life going to church and a Christian school and I know why I believe what I do. My brain elves have let me down trying to expression my knowledge. They must be loosing a step as they get older.(you have to know David Rudd to understand the elves)

Currently there exsists a war inside that I do not have any easy answers for. I know the truth that I must follow but it does not make it any easier. I often think about ways to end the war, but my imagination takes the war to new scenarios. Scenarios that might not be true but eat at me. They play with my mind until I think it cannot go any further, then something new is created.

I pray for God to change in me what started the war. I hope change comes soon, but I am afraid that it may not. I want this war to be over, to move past it and continue on the journey. Maybe that is my problem, I came to a place where this war had to be confronted and resolved before movement forward is possible. The war is exhausting. There have been short respites of tranquility, they are far to short and the war is ready to continue when they are over.

As I read this it sounds life altering, its not. I just needed to get it out. I have only told one person, maybe I will tell more, maybe not. As one of my cousins says, we all have secrets.

And so the war continues......back and forth in my head.

Movie Theater Etiquette

so i went to Baby Mama this weekend. funny movie, worth the time and money. i had a gift card so it didnt cost me anything, but if i had it would have been worth it. anywho back to the point, the group behind us in the theater had a baby. not a toddler that 'might' be able to make it through a movie but a baby, less than one most likely. now i am not against people bringing babies into movies at certain times, but when your baby starts to cry, the movie theater is not the place to 'sush' to try and get it to stop crying.

times when it is appropriate to bring a baby to the movies:
1-when the movie is geared towards the toddler/young child age group
2-afternoon movies when crowds will be decreased
3-after the movie has been out a few weeks and less people will be watching the movie

opening weekend at night is not a good time to decide to go watch a movie with baby in tow. maybe the title of the movie made the people think it was okay to bring a baby?

does this make me insensitive? am i out of line here? the possibility exsists that the answer is yes to both. but i am leaning towards no on both accounts. when you decide to have a baby you give up the right to do whatever you want whenever you want. some activities are just not appropriate to bring a baby to.

i go to movies to relax and enjoy the movie experience devoid of extraneous distractions. for those of us that still enjoy going to movies, if you have a baby, please do not bring them to the movies.

my weekend

i am a little surprised that last weeks quote has not been answered yet. this one is somewhat obscure but any other quote from this movie would have made it way too easy. this movie is a classic comedy, maybe best ever.

i saw three movies this weekend in the theater. i think that may be a record for me. not something i do often but all three were pretty good.

first i saw expelled: no intelligence allowed. it is a documentary by ben stein about how the scientific community reacts to anything intelligent design. very well made and very much worth the time. i will probably see this again. the best part is near the end when ben interviews richard dawkins, who is probably the staunchest darwinist supporter and greatest opponent of the intelligent design movement. he basically gets dawkins to admit that the cell is likely designed, but by aliens that planted it here after they evolved by a darwinian nature on their planet. this movie is worth going to if you are willing to challenge the status quo. if you beleive mainstream science without question and are unwilling to challenge that perception then this movie is not for you. i think this movie puts a spolight on attitudes and actions within the scientific/academic community that most people do not think actually takes place.

the second movie was forgetting sarah marshall. pretty funny movie, crude in some places and mildly bad languauge, but overall it had its funny moments.

the last movie was the forbidden kingdom. this is the first movie that jackie chan and jet li have done together. obviously a martial arts movie and a good one, but if you are not into martial arts movies, not for you.

this movie comes out on April 18th and i will be there opening night. i am very interested to see how this is going to be presented. below is a preview of what it is about then a short synopsis, which i did not write. i have read a few books that have detailed some of the shady things that happen when scientists try to bring to light evidence that runs counter to the mainstream darwinistic philosophy. why? why are scientists blackballed when they try to present scientific arguments for intelligent design? trying to prove design is no different than trying to prove that life evolved over billions of years from nothing to humans. to try and argue otherwise is poppycock. but that is what evolutionists do. apparently what is good for the goose is not good for the gander, since evolutionist think that there is a difference. its okay for them to try and prove nothing to humans with facts, but design advocates are not allowed to make their case.

It's been a while.

i looked back and its been almost nine months since my last real post. i have had stuff to blog about but i usually forget by the time i am at my computer. i forgot about this one twice already but now i actually have sat down to write.

when was the last time you helped someone less fortunate than you with no assurance of anything in return? what about someone who was homeless? or any random act of kindness? last summer i went to a couple tiger games and this winter i went to a red wings game. inevitably there are people outside the stadiums asking for money. should i give them any? there is a guy that was going around my neighborhood last summer asking to do yard work for money. i helped him out, every so often he comes around to shovel or rake leaves. occasionally i would give him money ......even when he had not done any work recently.

conventional wisdom in our society seems to say not to give money to people that ask for it without anything in return. 'those people' are just trying to trick you out of money, too lazy to work, only want to con you out of your money, or they just want the money to buy booze. does that matter? can i live with a clean conscience just walking by and not helping our at all? when is it appropriate to help or do i just leave that for the 'ministries' that are created to help 'those people'?

within the past year or two i have begun to change the way i think. hopefully for the better. i think that we are commanded to help 'those people'. as a christain it is hard to try and justify walking past 'those people' or avoid them in my neighborhood without doing something. i am not a big fan of the 'what would jesus do' slogan, became to commercialized and americanized, but i have to think to myself, if jesus was next to me and saw the way i handled a situation would he be proud or disappointed? i have to think, not what would jesus do, but what does jesus want me to do? how does jesus want me to share his love with other people?

i realize i am suppose to be a good steward or what God has given me, including my finances, but i cannot compromise the display of Christ's love to other people. the perception of christians in america today is not good. why? if we truly showed his love to all people, would that perception still be out there or would people be drawn to him because of what we do? the quote at the top of this website is a constant reminder to me that what i do every minute of every day has eternal consequences.

how can i live with my actions if they push people farther away from God................how can you?

so about six weeks ago i started a real post but got sidetracked and never finished. so here is a real post not related to movie quote monday.

i have a program that tracks how many people visit this site. most weeks its not that many. anywhere from 1 or 2 up to a high around 20 per day will visit my site. i never gave much thought to it, i really didn't do this because i thought a lot of people were going to read it. i checked it today and yesterday had a huge swell of visitors. not exactly sure why but 87 people came to this page. today it was at 12. strange.

i had something else i was going to blog about but now that i am at my computer i cant remember what it was, i will probably remember tomorrow at work and forget again by the time i get home. oh well.

Running Goal
